This would be in place of running it through the radiator... although if you really wanted to, you could still use the radiator routing, and route the return line into the additional transmission cooler, then back to the transmission.

But if I had my way about it, I'd bypass the radiator altogether. That hot coolant doesn't provide much heat transfer for the hot transmission fluid.

huh? the air moving across the cooler is what helps...

On 3100's, the radiator has a "trans cooler" built into it... essentially using the same cooling fins that the coolant uses. At least my car was like that.

Since the coolant generally runs a little hotter than trans fluid, it would be my best guess to use a separate trans cooler since it would be more efficient. The 2in1 design I think isn't the best idea.

I just rebuilt my 95's trans for the 2nd time. Several weeks ago the engine over heated while sitting in traffic. After that incident I had the dreaded lock up in 2d gear. Tore the trans down found the fluid cooked and most of the plastic thrust washers were melted or disintegrating.
I had been debating an external cooler for awhile and now was a good time. I have owned the car since 96k miles and it now has 283k on it.
I could not get more than 10k miles before the fluid was turning brown. A close friend of mine who also had Berettas had the same issue.
I just installed a B&M trans cooler (9,000lb GVW) and bypassed the radiator cooler. Well let me tell you that on the scan tool, the trans runs cooler than the engine now which is a good thing. Think about this. If your engine is 200°, the trans is going to be there as well. Not good.
I understand the thinking that its better in the winter for warm up but I will tell you that just by idling the engine with the external only it will get hot enough that you cant touch it. To me that's hot!
So my test is to see how long it takes to color the fluid now.
Also, I mounted mine to the latch support. I would NEVER use those zip ties that go through the radiator or condensor cores. They are the fastest way to ruining them!

My car never sees winter so it needs no warmup... But yes my trans is typically at the 180-185 range when driving. And that's not to shabby seeing I have a 3k high stall converter in there.

Also whats wrong with using the plastic trans cooler mount's? I use them all the time, you screw up one little section of the fins to install it and that's it. Those are used on tons of applications so I dont see why you are so afraid of them. Hell the rocks and bugs do more damage to your condenser than those ever will.

and a correction on Geoff... The trans cooler really is just a line or two that goes up and down in the side plastic core. It doesn't even go out in to the radiator itself, its really just using the temperature of the coolant to cool/heat the oil.

I'm getting ready to put in a power steering fluid cooler soon... That sucker gets SCREAMING hot.

haha my cooler has been on for almost 100k miles and i used the plastic clips through the radiator.

I think they are okay to use. I did have to redo them when i replaced the radiator a couple years ago though.

Yeah I had to replace the ties this year too since I had to remove the cooler to clean it out after my epic fail building the trans this year.
